Quoi t’après faire, Hibou Hébert? is a Louisiana French children’s book intended for our youngest readers, with vibrant illustrations by Lafayette’s own Cayla Zeek. So many people I know want to share their Cajun and Creole heritage with their kids; this book is one accessible way of doing that.

Published by UL Press, it’s designed as a board book with phrases that adults often say to children and illustrated with animals familiar to Louisianians. It features a number of common Louisiana names and uses rhyme, assonance and alliteration to make reading aloud easier for French learners, whether they are second language learners or Louisianians who are learning to read and write in their native French.

This project received support from a 2025 Artspark grant and from the Louisiana Consortium of Immersion Schools.

Artspark is a competitive grant program supported by the Lafayette Economic Development Authority and the National Endowment for the Arts, and administered by the Acadiana Center for the Arts.

The Louisiana Consortium of Immersion Schools is a 501c3 nonprofit supporting language immersion in Louisiana schools.
